Zelenskyy Pushes for Japan Defense Deal
In an interview with Japanese media, published Friday and conducted in Kyiv, Zelenskyy described air defense as "crucial" for Ukraine, adding it would be "very helpful" if Takaichi chose to open a dialogue on the matter.
"Madame prime minister -- she's very welcome … We can think about it as quick as possible," Zelenskyy was quoted as saying when asked about a potential meeting with the Japanese leader.
The Ukrainian president said he stands ready to meet Takaichi "in any format" — whether on the sidelines of major international summits or during a direct visit to Japan. He singled out Tokyo as "one of these countries" holding licenses to manufacture air defense systems, underscoring its strategic value to Kyiv.
Zelenskyy was emphatic that such systems are "not for offensive" purposes, framing them solely as a shield against Russian strikes.
In a separate post on X, the US social media platform, Zelenskyy described prospective Ukraine-Japan defense cooperation as "historic," and extended an open invitation to Takaichi, saying she would be "very welcome" in Kyiv. "I think it would be very important for our two countries," he wrote.
Beyond air defense, Zelenskyy offered Japan access to Ukraine's sea drone technology, noting that the capability "works" — pointing to Russia's inability to freely operate naval vessels near Ukrainian shores as proof of its battlefield effectiveness.
